Historically, the dragon was the symbol of imperial power in ancient China. The emperor, as well as his high-ranking officials, often wore robes decorated with the serpentine creatures. But not all dragons are created equal: specifically, dragons with five claws were only to be worn by the Emperor, Son of Heaven, himself, while four claws denoted lower nobility.
